22.00hrs : Photo
We
have Adam Garrod to thank for sending through this
photo which was taken last Friday (30 July 2010)
when students took a group of children from Twabuka
Community School to visit Victoria Falls.
If any parent would like me to send them a higher
resolution photo which shows everyone in much greater
detail, then please drop me an email
and I'll forward on the original image as an attachment.

August 2010 : Email from Esther McCall
Apologies for being out of touch recently,
but as you can probably imagine things have been very busy
here. Anyway I just wanted to send through a few more photos...
some more of the pre-school building on the day we arrived,
the welcome etc; some from our visit to Vic Falls, the Netball
Teams after our match on Saturday (the kit they are
wearing having been donated by Emily Mill’s UK Netball
Team), a photo of the Football Teams after their game,
some pictures taken of the pre-school yesterday showing
our students' handy work and finally a couple from the handover
ceremony which also includes a photo of some National Dance
champions from a neighbouring school.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Jet Extreme
– the jet boat activity and all got thoroughly wet
(right through to their underwear in most cases).
The good thing was that it was a fairly sunny day and so
we were able to dry out fairly quickly. I’m pleased
to say that all have good stories to tell of their chosen
activities. These ranged from the Gorge Swing, Bungee Jumping,
Gorge Slide, Walking with Lions, Elephant-back Safari, Helicopter
flights, White Water Rafting and Canoeing.
Yesterday’s hand-over ceremony marked
the culmination of all our hard work. The disappointing
thing was that as the President was in town, the ZNBC and
The Daily News didn’t send representatives as they
did last time. I was, however, able to employ a freelance
person to take DVD footage of events so hopefully a DVD
of the ceremony, together with clips taken from student's
cameras that are able to take short DVD footage, can be
used to put together a DVD memento of our trip.
The ceremony was a superb occasion, presided
over by the Chief Education Minister. Once again our students
were fully engaged with interacting with the village children.
In the afternoon they had some rest and relaxation time
and a number took the opportunity to start to pack. This
was no mean feat as a great number of souvenirs (small
herds of giraffe and elephant, African masks, the odd African
Drum, wooden bowls, salad servers etc.) have been bought
and now have to be lovingly transferred to the UK.
We dined out for our last time in the evening
at the David Livingstone Hotel. The hotel was a more luxurious
version of Chobe. The food was a braai buffet and once again
students took the opportunity to eat as much as they possibly
could. The food was excellent.
Have a good day and keep your fingers crossed
that all goes well for our journey home.

Note
Having slept for the final time under canvas,
students will today begin to wend their way home. As with
the outward journey I will monitor flights and report here
if there are any delays etc.
Wed 04 August 2010 : 12.37hrs
(Local Time) - 11.37hrs (GMT)
Students are currently sat at Livingstone airport waiting
to board Flt BA 6292 to Johannesburg which is scheduled
to depart at 13.30hrs (12.30 GMT). At the moment
the flight status is "on time".
Wed 04 August 2010 : 14.55
hrs (GMT) : Webmaster Note
Flt BA 6292 finally departed at 14.02hrs
(local time) some 32 minutes later than scheduled.
Despite the delay some time was made up en route and I'm
pleased to report their plane landed at 15.27hrs (local
time). Students will now have a few hours wait before
boarding this evening's flight headed for Heathrow.
Wed 04 August 2010 : 19.30
hrs (GMT) : Webmaster Note
Our adventurers are now on the final leg
of their journey home! Flight BA 0056 took off from Johannesburg
airport at 20.26hrs (local time) just a few minutes
later than anticipated - take off having been delayed by
11 minutes.
They are currently scheduled to land at Heathrow at 06.15hrs
tomorrow morning.
Thur 05
August 2010 : 06.40hrs (GMT) : Webmaster Note
Flight BA 0056 landed
just 3 minutes late at 06.23hrs. Now begins the wait to
collect everyone's gear from the baggage carousels.
Thur 05 August 2010 : 07.39hrs
: Webmaster Note
With the news (at 07.39hrs) that
the team are on the coach and have just started their journey
back to school, I think now is probably a good time for
me to sign off from my 'tracking duties'.
Not surprisingly the number of visitors
to the website rose dramatically as the trip got under way
~ with an average of approximately 670 hits per day ~ double
that yesterday and over 21,500 hits during the course of
the expedition. Amazing! I would like to thank all of the
parents (and students) that helped out by passing
on their messages and also for the kind words of support
I've received.
The website will remain a 'work in progress'
as I populate the photo albums in the weeks ahead, so do
check back from time to time to look for new additions to
the galleries.
Let's hope that this is a summer our students
will remember always… both for the expedition and
also for their (hopefully) successful examination
results. My best wishes to them all ~ Laura
